All-electric drive technology opens up new possibilities
Smaller, lighter, faster, greater precision, improved reproducibility - these are the demands being placed on an ever increasing number of new products and their components, demands which necessitate the use of components new manufacturing technologies. In the field of injection molding, this means utilizing the potential of all electric drive technology. Engel's new range of E-MOTION injection molding machines, which feature this technology, enable plastics processors to meet these exacting demands.

ENGEL E-MOTION T
The machine for the most exacting requirements:
>
The ENGEL E-MOTION machine system is the all-electric complement to Engel's hydraulic toggle injection molding system, a system which has meanwhile proved itself a good 40,000 times over. It has been developed specially for such highly demanding applications as the production of high-precision and micro-precision parts for medical and other exacting technologies.
>
The all-electric drive concept combines high precision and reproducibility (through the use of servo drives) with excellent environmental compatibility (through negligible energy consumption and low emission).
>
The ENGEL E-MOTION T series of injection molding machines offers, in addition to the advantages of an all-electric machine, the entire spectrum of advantages featured by the traditional toggle machine. Complete interchangeability of accessories is a further advantageous feature.
>

There is no need to re-train the operator, as the control system has remained basically the same and the machine is operated just like any other Engel machine. It can also utilize the wide range of existing applications and quality assurance software.

The clamping unit
In the medium-size range, Engel offers systems based exclusively on the popular toggle clamping unit, entirely in keeping with the modern approach to the design and construction of injection molding machine

The optimum interaction of these components ensures perfect force equilibrium and stability. The combination of toggle clamp and servo-motor drive makes dry cycle time of approx. 1.6 seconds possible. All system components which perform linear movements run on precision linear bearings in the special guide frame, thus giving machine-tool precision in continuous operation, irrespective of the load applied by the weight of the mould. High-resolution measuring and control systems (sinecosine transmitters in the three-phase serve motors) ensure reproducibility of machine movements within precision tolerances. Pressure measurement is effected by means of external pressure transducers. Enlarged platens (B-platens) are standard and can accommodate large or awkwardly sized moulds, thus permitting optimum utilization of machine capacity.

The injection unit
The basic compact-design concept of the Engel hydraulic injection units, featuring twin drives for the injection stroke, is also the basic concept of the electrically driven injection units. Certain tried-and-tested features, such as the cylinder swing-out facility giving easy access for maintenance, or the standard quick-action cylinder mounting system, have been retained. Engel cylinders and screws belonging to Engel hydraulic machines can also be used on Engel all-electric machines. No modifications are necessary.

Broader technology scope with ENGEL E-Motion injection units

Thanks to their specific advantages, all-electric injection units can be readily used in conjunction with certain new injection molding technologies:

X-MELT (expansion injection molding):
With this process, the melt is compressed either in the space in front of the screw or in the hot runner. Once it is fully compressed, the shut-off nozzle opens and the melt "explodes" into the mould, fitting it instantaneously. Accurate maintenance of the specified compression and screw position is an absolute prerequisite for the successful application of this process. It is used primarily for the production of thin-wall or thin-section parts, as it is far more economical than accumulator-based systems. The standard ENGEL E-Motion injection molding machine fully meets the requirements of the X-Melt process.

Mixing Degree Control:
This is a control module which monitors the interaction of screw speed and screw retraction and the resultant back pressure during the metering operation. The readings serve to set the machine to an extremely constant, predetermined degree of mixing for the basic material and the additives.

Drive unit for hydraulic core puller
So as to ensure full compatibility with conventional injection moulds, Engel offers a hydraulic drive unit for actuating hydraulic functions. This unit, which can be integrated into the machine system, is available in two basic sizes. It is connected to the machine by means of high-speed couplings. As a further option, one drive unit can be coupled to several machines.

  ENGEL linear robot ER-HLI
The tiebarless machine concept affords the robot arm unrestricted lateral access to the mould, as there is no upper tiebar to negotiate. This permits a simple design of robot and a saving of space and costs. As the demolding robot and the delivery conveyor can be fully integrated in the machine, under the safety hood, a standard production cell can be supplied complete with robot and conveyor ex works.

Engel automation offers a full range of automation facilities, such as ENGEL ERC robots and ENGEL sprue removal devices.
